Historic Restoration
Chris Woods Construction was selected as the Construction Manager to complete the reconstruction of the sanctuary for First United Methodist Church that was destroyed by fire in 2006. Starting with a steel structure that was erected as part of the first reconstruction effort in 2008, CWC and the architect, were charged with finding the most suitable and cost effective approach to completing and enclosing the 16,000 square foot structure. CWC searched for alternatives to a slate roof, finding a metal shingle system, closely resembling slate, which had not yet been introduced to the Memphis area. Massive hand cut limestone wainscot blocks and entrance surrounds salvaged from the original structure were incorporated that required special structural support. The multi-phased project was completed in 13 months with a total cost of $3.2 million.
