Construction of the Lakeland high school is close to starting as a $35 million building permit has been filed for work on the project.

Chris Woods Construction Co. Inc. is the contractor on the project for the Lakeland School System at 5020 Lions Crest Drive, according to the permit filed Wednesday, March 27.

The project includes a new 218,000-square-foot high school building for classrooms, labs, a varsity gymnasium, auditorium and fine arts facilities.

A football field house building, baseball locker room, multipurpose locker room and concessions for football and soccer are part of the project.

Earlier this month, the Lakeland School Board entered into an agreement to purchase 15 acres for the future site of a new elementary school, and indicated work on the high school was pending.

Land grading could begin by the end of June and officials said the timetable for opening the new high school remains August 2022.
